If you've ever tried to buy Alphonso mangoes online in India, you've almost certainly come across two names — Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso. Both are GI-tagged. Both are called Hapus. Both come from the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. So what's actually different?
At RQD Farm, we grow and supply both varieties directly from our orchards. In this guide, we break down every real difference between Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso mangoes — so you can make an informed choice before you order.

What Is the Alphonso Mango?
The Alphonso mango, locally known as Hapus, is widely regarded as the king of mangoes in India. It is prized for its rich golden colour, creamy non-fibrous texture, intense sweetness, and powerful floral aroma. The Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Alphonso mango covers specific talukas in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra.
Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango — Characteristics
Ratnagiri Alphonso is the most widely known and commercially popular variety of Hapus mango. It is grown in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, which has a distinct coastal microclimate influenced by the Arabian Sea.
Colour: Bright saffron-yellow skin with deep orange pulp
Flavour: Rich, tangy-sweet with a slight acidic note
Texture: Creamy and smooth, virtually fibre-free
Aroma: Strong, distinctive Hapus fragrance
Season: Mid-April to late June
Devgad Alphonso Mango — Characteristics
Devgad Alphonso is grown in the Devgad taluka of Sindhudurg district. Among mango connoisseurs, Devgad Alphonso is often considered the superior variety — though this is largely a matter of personal taste.
Colour: Deep golden-yellow, sometimes with a greenish tinge even when ripe
Flavour: Sweeter, richer, and more intense — less acidic than Ratnagiri
Texture: Extremely creamy — almost melt-in-the-mouth consistency
Aroma: Slightly more aromatic and floral compared to Ratnagiri
Season: Early April to mid-June — slightly shorter season
Which Alphonso Mango Should You Buy - Ratnagiri vs Devgad Alphonso ?
If you enjoy a balance of sweetness and tang with a bold, classic Hapus flavour — choose Ratnagiri Alphonso. If you prefer maximum sweetness, a creamier texture, and a more intense aroma — choose Devgad Alphonso. Both are authentic, GI-tagged, and naturally ripened at RQD Farm. You can also order a mixed box to taste both and decide your favourite.
