What is Alphonso mango?
Alphonso mango — known as Hapus in Marathi — is India's most prized mango variety, grown in the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. It holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Government of India, certifying its authentic origin in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Known for its deep saffron pulp, fibre-free texture, intense sweetness, and strong aroma, it is called the King of Mangoes.
What is the difference between Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso mango?
Both are GI-tagged Alphonso varieties from Maharashtra's Konkan coast. Devgad Alphonso mangoes are generally sweeter, creamier, and more aromatic due to their specific coastal microclimate in Sindhudurg district. Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes have a bright saffron-yellow skin and a rich, tangy-sweet flavour. Both are premium varieties — preference is personal taste.
What is a GI tag and why does it matter for Alphonso mangoes?
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a Government of India certification that legally recognises a product's unique origin. For Alphonso mangoes, only fruit grown within specific talukas of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts qualifies. RQD Farm's orchards in Bankot, Mandangad, Ratnagiri are within this GI-certified zone — guaranteeing authentic origin.
How do I identify a genuine Alphonso mango vs a fake one?
Genuine Alphonso mangoes have a strong fruity fragrance even before cutting, saffron-yellow skin, and deep orange fibre-free pulp. Carbide-ripened fakes lack natural fragrance, have whitish pulp near the seed, taste flat, and deteriorate within 1–2 days. All RQD Farm mangoes are naturally ripened — never treated with calcium carbide.
When is Alphonso mango season in India?
Alphonso mango season in India runs from mid-March to late June, peaking in April and May. Ratnagiri Alphonso is typically available from early April; Devgad Alphonso from mid-April. RQD Farm accepts orders from April 1st each year, subject to seasonal availability.
Is Hapus mango and Alphonso mango the same?
Yes. Hapus and Alphonso refer to the same mango variety. "Alphonso" is the English/commercial name, while "Hapus" is the Marathi name used locally in Maharashtra. Both refer to the GI-tagged premium mango grown in Ratnagiri and Devgad.
